We're happy to announce the release of Silent Way v1.5.0, which adds a new plug-in to the suite - Silent Way Step LFO.

Silent Way Step LFO is a combination step sequencer and LFO generator. It shares many of the features of the LFO plug-in, but rather than generating waveforms based on simple sine, triangle etc. waves it generates a waveform that the user draws in the GUI. When the waveform is interpreted as a series of discrete values, rather than as a continuous wave- form, then the output is that of a traditional analogue step sequencer.

Other changes in v1.5.0:
* The Smooth control on all plug-ins is now calibrated in milliseconds, and has a much larger range.
* All Mac OS X versions now require Mac OS X 10.4.11 or higher.

We're happy to announce the release of Silent Way v1.4.3, which adds a new plug-in to the suite - Silent Way CV Input.

Silent Way CV Input is something of a breakthrough in audio interface-based computer/CV interaction, since it lets you get your CVs back into the computer (most other CV-generation software focusses entirely on generating CVs). Moreover this plug-in has no special requirements on the audio interface, and so is not just usable by those with DC-coupled interfaces.

This release also fixes an issue with the AU Generator versions of Silent Way DC & LFO (added in v1.4.1) when loaded as mono plug-ins.

Silent Way Trigger is a simple plug-in for generating a gate or envelope in response to an incoming MIDI note. A typical application would be for triggering drum sounds, where you might have a number of different sounds mapped to different notes.

* Added a per-envelope Reset To Zero control, which controls whether the envelopes always start from zero when triggered, or whether they start from their current value (which is the common behaviour in hardware envelope generators).

Following up on the last post about the font changes in Snow Leopard - we've been able to test the new font files as provided in OS X 10.6, and the good news is that the plug-ins work fine with them.

So, the best workaround for people installing Expert Sleepers plug-ins on Snow Leopard is as follows:
- right click on the plug-in file, and do "Show Package Contents".
- inside the folder "Contents/Resources", find the file "gui.lua".
- open this file in a text editor (e.g. TextEdit).
- replace all occurrences of "GillSans.dfont" with "GillSans.ttc".
- save the file.

All of our releases from now on will contain this change by default, so there will be no need to carry out this procedure.

Just a quick statement on compatibility with the new version of Mac OS X, 10.6 "Snow Leopard".

We don't have 10.6 installed on any Expert Sleepers Macs, nor do we intend to for a while, probably at least until the inevitable 10.6.1 is released. There's just too much stuff that needs to keep working here, which isn't yet known to be compatible.

For this reason, we're as yet unable to directly support Expert Sleepers plug-ins on 10.6. That said, if users want to go ahead and try 10.6, we'll try to help as best we can with any problems that occur.

One issue has already been reported. Apparently Apple have changed some things around relating to fonts in 10.6 - see this article, for example. Most of the Expert Sleepers plug-ins use the font "GillSans.dfont", which sadly is one of the type that Apple appear to have retired. Fortunately most plug-ins that have seen an update recently fall back to "Monaco.dfont" if GillSans.dfont is not found, and it seems that Monaco.dfont is still shipped in 10.6, so the GUIs will continue to work, though will look a bit wrong.

The exception is Crossfade Loop Synth, which simply fails if it can't find GillSans.dfont. The workaround, until an updated version is released, is to either restore the GillSans.dfont file from a backup (it lives in "/Library/Fonts/GillSans.dfont", and will quite happily live alongside the newer "GillSans.ttc" which Snow Leopard installs), or duplicate any font of your choosing (e.g. the aforementioned Monaco.dfont) and rename it as GillSans.dfont.

There's a possibility of a nicer fix, but first we need to establish whether my plug-ins are compatible with the newer ".ttc" font format. Expect an update soon.

Apart from this font issue, there are so far no other problems reported with Expert Sleepers plug-ins and Snow Leopard.

We're happy to announce the release of Silent Way v1.1.0 (all platforms & formats).

This is primarily an update to the Voice Controller plug-in, though the DC plug-in also benefits from the OSC enhancements.

The full list of changes in this version is as follows:

• The Voice Controller AU now has an effect variant so it will work in Digital Performer.
• Added new OSC commands (registerOSCPathForParameter() and registerOSCPathForParameterNormalized()) added, primarily for compatibility with TouchOSC.
• Output configuration changed from a set of drop-down menus to a full matrix of knobs.
• Envelope scale parameters removed, since the same functionality is now offered by the output matrix.
• Added new 'velocity' output.
• Added velocity-based scaling of envelopes.
• Added Hz/V calibration mode.
• Areas of the full MIDI note range note covered during calibration are now filled with ‘wrapped around’ values from octaves that are covered.
• Added note priority modes (last/low/high) and retrigger modes (on/off).
• Added ‘panic’ button.
• Fixed some incorrect envelope triggering behaviours.
• The ‘trigger’ output is now slightly longer than before (it was previously a single audio sample).

NB the reworking of the output configuration unfortunately means that v1.1.0 of the Voice Controller is not preset-compatible with earlier versions. If you install this version and then load up a song that already uses the Voice Controller, some of the settings (notably the envelopes) will be wrong. This is something we usually go to great lengths to avoid in Expert Sleepers plug-ins, but we felt it was acceptable in this case as most workflows will involve using Silent Way to control a synth which is then recorded as audio before moving on - so to some extent storing presets is irrelevant, since you can't store the state of the synth along with it.

The VST versions (Mac and Windows) of Silent Way have been updated to v1.0.2.

These are identical except now the Voice Controller plug-in is no longer a VSTi. This makes it possible to use in Cubase, since Cubase has problems routing audio to virtual instruments.

NB if you were successfully using v1.0.1 (e.g. in Live) you may find you need to slightly reconfigure your song files to take account of this change. We apologise for the inconvenience.

The AU version is unchanged, and remains a virtual instrument.

We're proud to announce the release of Silent Way, a suite of plug-ins designed for use as part of a modular analogue synthesiser system. The plug-ins produce no sound themselves, nor do they process sound - rather, they generate signals to be used as control voltages (CVs), which can be patched into the control inputs of oscillators, filters, VCAs etc. of an analogue system.

By listening to the synthesiser’s output signal, the plug-in is able to calibrate itself to generate the appropriate pitch CV for the incoming MIDI notes.

Axel Baesler, the author of the aforementioned script for Augustus Loop, has published his tutorial on how he's set up his (almost) dream looping environment. Read it here. Extract:

Ever since I figured out how to remote control clip recording in Ableton Live 7 over midi, which was about a year ago, I’ve been trying to build the “ultimate computer based loop station”. I’ve built increasingly more complex Live Sets utilized all sorts of routing tricks and midi conversion scripts and always ended up sort of discontent, because my setups could not be operated effectively with just the 10 switches and two pedals my Behringer FCB1010 midi controller provided. No matter what I tried, I always seemed to end up staring confusedly at the floor board wondering where the hell I was while my potentially brilliant musical idea vanished into thin air.

Then I stumbled over Expert Sleepers Augustus Loop 2 which provided a completely programmable midi control environment and I knew this would give me all I needed to come up with a controlling setup I could use to actually control my loops. The main remaining problem now was that if I used more than one loop the FCB1010 out of the box wouldn’t give me any feedback on what loop I was operating on. Then I found out about the unofficial Uno firmware upgrade (http://www.ossandust.be/). I had a friend burn the downloaded image file on an eeprom chip and was now able to operate the unit in “stompbox mode”. In short, this makes it possible to have one row of buttons on the FCB1010 act as pedals that operate independently of the selected patches in the other row. Now, I can select a loop to control by stepping on one of the buttons in the lower row and the LED on this button stays on even when I press buttons in the upper row to manipulate the loop.

I have written my own lua midi script and gui for Augustus which I’ve been able to extend even further since Os, its ever helpful developer, has built in some event timing support. So, for the first time since I discovered the joys of live looping I’m very content with my setup. That’s why I’m making it public here. Maybe someone finds it useful, too. And hopefully I’ll get to making more actual music now instead of working on my setup (well, one can dream).

Augustus Loop v2.1.0 is now released (all formats/platforms).

v2.1.0 adds some new functionality to Augustus's MIDI/OSC and GUI scripting.

Timing functions

In MIDI/OSC scripts you can now
* get the time between two events
* ask for a function to be called after a certain amount of time, or regularly at a specified interval.

Using these functions you can do useful things like distinguish between short and long footpedal presses, or detect double taps etc.

GUI indicators for MIDI/OSC script status

A new form of the existing 'indicator' GUI item has been added, together with some corresponding MIDI/OSC script functions, to allow you to create GUI elements that reflect the state of scripted variables.

These new features were developed after a request from Axel Baesler, who has used them to make a fairly complex script based on my Multilooper script. Augustus Loop v2.0.1 is now available (for all platforms) from the downloads page.

Changes in this version:
* It is now possible to completely override the default MIDI/OSC script with a custom script. (Previously it was only possible to extend the functionality, not replace it.)
* Added a new preferences option, 'Ignore AudioUnitReset', which can be useful when using the AU version of the plug-in in a live context. See the manual for a fuller explanation.
